Guatemala City’s urban grid and the small communities that houses, have a huge potential for development. Unfortunately the current conditions and the quality of the public space halt many of the aspects of this potential development. One of the areas with the biggest potentiality, but with the same huge problems, is the neighbourhood of La Reformita, in the zona 12 area.
In this project the current state of La Reformita was analyzed in order to get familiarized with the profile of the area and its population. Based on this, a conceptual proposal was generated with the objective of recover the public space and give it back to the community. One of the decisive aspects that stood out was the quality of the urban morphology; La Reformita has wide streets within a regular grid and an interesting topography.
For the analysis a graphic evaluation system was developed, which classifies blocks and streets in three main categories: Connection, Commerce, and Community. To exemplify and generate the urban proposal, three adjacent streets where chosen, each of them representing one of the the three categories. The 13th, 14th and 15th street of zona 12 go all the way through La Reformita but possess completely different characters. In each of these streets the objective was to recover the space for the local population and for the vegetation. Depending on how intensive was the circulation of vehicles the number of lanes were reduced or completely eliminated. Giving space for plazas and pedestrian streets that fit better with the current uses around them.
La retícula de la Ciudad de Guatemala, y las pequeñas comunidades barriales que alberga poseen un potencial de desarrollo inmenso. Desafortunadamente las condiciones actuales y la calidad del espacio público ponen un alto a muchos aspectos de este potencial desarrollo. Una de estas áreas con grandes potencialidades pero con problemas igual de grandes es el barrio de La Reformita en la zona 12
En este proyecto se analizó la situación actual de la Reformita para conocer a fondo el perfil del área y su población, y en base a esto generar una propuesta conceptual para recuperar el espacio público y devolvérselo a la comunidad. Uno de los aspectos decisivos al momento de escoger este barrio fue la calidad de su morfología urbana. La Reformita cuenta con calles y aceras amplias dentro de una retícula regular y sobre una topografía interesante.
Para el análisis se desarrolló un sistema de evaluación gráfico que clasifica las cuadras y calles en tres distintos géneros: Conexión, Comercio y Comunidad. Y para ejemplificar este análisis y generar la propuesta urbana se escogieron tres calles adyacentes que representaran cada uno de estos tres géneros. La 13, 14 y 15 calle de la Zona 12 atraviesan La Reformita de un lado a otro pero poseen caracteres completamente distintos. En cada una el objetivo principal fue el de recuperar el espacio para el peatón y para la vegetación. Dependiendo de la intensidad del tráfico, los carriles se redujeron o se eliminaron completamente. Dando espacio para plazas y calles peatonales que se adecuan mejor a los usos actuales aledaños.
